Looking to Downsize Before a Big Move? Here Are Some Tips…

Moving is a big job that requires a lot of time to go through items and decide what you really need before you start packing. One of the worst things you can do is pack items you no longer need or want and bring them into your new home. This not only creates clutter but is also a waste of your time…time you could use to pack the things you truly need.

For many people, moving is a great time to downsize because it forces you to clean all closets, as well as the basement or attic you may have neglected for years. You may be surprised at the number of things you’ve accumulated over the years.

Here are some tips to help you downsize, cut the clutter, and pack only what you need.

Truly Look at What You Have

Now is the time to really look at what you have and decide what you want to keep. This is not a surface cleaning of all of your stuff. This is the time to take inventory and understand what you have.

Ask yourself if you’ve used the item in the last year. If you haven’t, that’s a pretty good indication that you don’t need it anymore. As you go through each item, you’ll accumulate a pile of items you can either donate or try to sell. Either way, they’re not coming with you!

Take Your Time

Just as it took a good amount of time to accumulate all of your stuff, it’s going to take a good amount of time to go through it all. You want to start early so that you have time to look at each item. While you don’t want to take hours going through one box, you also want to give yourself enough time to get through everything.

It’s best to make three piles; one to donate, one to sell, and one to throw away. While you’ll want to try to donate or sell as much as you can, many items are beyond repair and just need to be thrown away. You may be surprised at how many items end up in the junk pile. There’s a good chance you put it away, hoping to save it for later, and never got around to it again.

Dispose of the Things you Don’t Want

After you’ve gone through everything, and we mean everything, it’s time to throw it all away. For a big move where you intend to downsize, getting a dumpster is usually a good idea. This allows you to throw everything away at once without worrying about putting everything in garbage bags. You can rent a dumpster in a variety of sizes, depending on how many things you need to get rid of.
