5 Tips for Renting a Dumpster

If you’re planning a move soon to start the new year off in a new home, chances are you’re going to need a dumpster to clean out your home. Over the years, people accumulate many things that they don’t want to take with them when they’re moving. While tag sales and making donations can help to get rid of some of the bulk, many other items just need to be thrown away.

That’s when having a dumpster is extremely helpful. If you try to throw everything away in large garbage bags, it’s going to take forever, not to mention you may not be allowed to toss some of the items with a regular garbage pick up. When you choose to rent a dumpster, you can throw things away easily, saving you time and headaches.

If it’s your first time renting a dumpster, check out these five helpful tips to get you going in the right direction.

1. Get the Right Size

When you’re thinking about renting a dumpster, you should have an idea of how much stuff you’re going to need to get rid of. Generally, we all have more stuff than we’d like to admit, so you want to get a dumpster that’s big enough to fit everything. Getting one a bit larger than you anticipate needing may be a good idea so that you don’t have to add a second dumpster down the road.

At Sweitzer Waste we offer dumpsters from 10 to 30 yards. Here’s a quick look at what our dumpsters can fit.

DUMPSTER SIZE CAPACITY SIZE COMPARISON
10 Yarder 11x7x3 2 Ton Limit 4 door car
12 Yarder 11x7x4 2.5 Ton Limit 4 door car
15 Yarder 13x7x5 3 Ton Limit Caravan vehicle
20 Yarder 16x7x6 4 Ton Limit Short Bus
30 Yarder 22x7x6 5 Ton Limit School Bus

This guide should give you an idea of the dumpster size you’re going to need.

2. Prepare the Area

A dumpster is going to take up a good amount of space on your property. You want to prepare the space where it’s going to sit well before it arrives. Choose a spot that is easily accessible for you to throw things away. Make sure it’s not near any vehicles or other property that could get damaged. You also want to leave enough space so that the dumpster can be brought in and out hassle-free.

3. Understand What You’re Paying For

Different dumpster rentals may have different terms, so you want to be sure you understand what you’re paying for. You may have to pay more if you exceed the dumpster rental weight limit or keep it longer than the rental period. You don’t want to pay extra; be clear about what your contract includes and what it doesn’t. This way there won’t be any surprises.

4. Avoid Prohibited Items

While you can throw many items in a dumpster, there are some prohibited items. At Sweitzer Waste, the following are items you can not put in a dumpster.

  • Hazardous or Medical Waste
  • Gasoline
  • Vehicle or Tractor Batteries
  • Diesel Fuel
  • Oil
  • Paint
  • Tires

Knowing this before you rent your dumpster can prevent many headaches once it arrives.

5. Book in Advance

While companies will do their best to accommodate you, there are usually a limited number of dumpsters available. Be sure to book ahead so you can get the size dumpster you need when you need it. Don’t take any chances and just assume it will be in stock. Plan ahead so there are no inconveniences.
