As we embrace the warm temperatures and spring weather, your yard may need some TLC this time of year. The winter can leave behind yard debris that needs to be cleaned up so you can enjoy your yard and entertain this spring and summer. Yard cleanup is also necessary so that your lawn and plants don’t get buried under debris.
We know that spring yard cleanup can be overwhelming which is why our team has put together these spring yard cleanup tips to get you going in the right direction.
5 Yard Clean-Up Tips
1. Survey the Damage
Before you start your cleanup, you need to know what you’re dealing with. Take a walk around your yard to see the type of debris you’re dealing with. Tree limbs? Leaves? These are most common. Look to see if any winter storms left behind any other damage. There are bound to be piles and piles of leaves and maybe even garbage that has blown around from the street or your neighbor’s yard. Knowing what you’re dealing with can help you determine what tools you need to get the job done.
2. Get the Right Tools
You need to have the right tools to get your spring cleanup right. You’ll need much more than a rake to get the job done. Consider these tools depending on what you have in your yard:
- Paper waste bags
- Pruning scissors
- Garden or Work Gloves
- Wheelbarrow
- Twine for branches
Depending on just how much yard waste you have, you may not be able to just leave the bags by the curb. If you’re dealing with a heavy yard clean-up, you may need to rent a dumpster to haul away the debris. This will make it easier to clean your yard because you can throw your debris in the dumpster. If you find any broken lawn furniture as you clean, you can toss it in the dumpster as well. You most likely can’t dispose of this type of debris in your regular trash pickup.
3. Start Cleaning
Now that you know what needs to be done and have the right tools, it’s time to get to work. Be sure everything is dry because it will weigh less and be easier to clean.
If you have a leaf blower, use it to get all debris in one place. Be sure not to tackle your spring cleanup on a windy day because you’ll make more work for yourself than you should. Also, depending on your yard size, you may not be able to get it done all in one day. Spread it out a bit to ensure that you are doing a good job and don’t miss anything.
4. Get Your Lawn Mower Ready
Once everything is clean, you may have to cut your grass a bit. If your grass isn’t quite there yet, now is a good time to make sure your lawnmower is working properly. Check to make sure it starts and that you have fuel for it. You may also want to have the blades professionally sharpened.
5. Don’t Forget the Flower Beds
During your cleaning, you don’t want to forget the flower beds. Any flower beds or gardens need to be cleaned so they can be prepped for the new season. This requires removing dead plants, twigs, and anything else that needs to be cleared. You’ll want to get this done soon so you can see what needs to be planted for the season.
